After months of speculation and a loan-spell at Getafe, premier league giants Manchester United have finally sanctioned a move away from Old Trafford for embattled English attacker Mason Greenwood. Greenwood, 22, was enjoying a brilliant career with the red devils before rape allegations emerged in January 2022, leading to his suspension pending investigation by the Greater Manchester Police. The controversy lasted for almost a year, in the backdrop of investigations which ended up with no conviction after a statement from investigative bodies indicated that ‘new evidence’ arose, that made prosecution impossible. Following his acquittal, a section of United fans hoped he would be reincorporated to the squad, regardless of the backlash and public rage it would stir, given the seriousness of the allegations made against him, with his accuser having shared irrefutable evidence including horrifying images and audio. However, United, at the time undergoing a ‘strategic process’, was obliged to conduct it’s own investigation before making any decision, given a whole career was at stake.

The internal process by the powers that be at Old Trafford was concluded in a matter of weeks, and premature leaks pointed to Greenwood’s reintegration into a then struggling squad. However, the public outcry that welcomed the leaks informed a change of heart by United hierarchy, despite indicating in their statement that there was no substantive proof that the English forward was guilty of the accusations made against him.

It, however became clear that his time at Old Trafford was coming to an end, and as a homegrown talent, United had the responsibility to care, so he was sent on a loan to Getafe, Spain. At the club, Greenwood enjoyed a short but sweet spell, leaving his mark there by winning the player of the year award, after scoring eight goals and registering seven assists in a total of 32 games across all competitions. At the end of the season, he returned to England, a move that elicited farfetched hope that he’d be accepted t the club among a small section of Manchester United fanbase.

However, on the 9th of July, it was reported that Manchester United had had given their greenlight for Ligue 1 outfit Olympique Marseille to sign Greenwood, after a bid of €30m, structured to accommodate a 50% sell on clause was accepted and that negotiations were ongoing between the players on salary and other personal terms. On Wednesday, July 17th, it was reported that his camp had accepted all terms and conditions of the deal, and it was set to be sealed. On Thursday morning, Greenwood landed to chants of his name in Marseille, where he was set to partake his medical tests and append his signature to his five year contract.
